Summer 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

It's hard to believe yet another academic year has whizzed by and I am now writing to you for the last time before we break-up for the summer holidays. As you can see from the content of the newsletter, it has been yet another term rich in diverse activities for the students organised and led by our committed and talented staff.

Each year that goes by sees the popularity of Calthorpe as the school of choice for parents and carers increase, with a huge number of first place referrals for admission. Due to this popularity Calthorpe has agreed to open a satellite school five minutes drive from our current site. The premises are currently being converted and should open in January 2020 accommodating around 38 younger students.

Given the strengths of Calthorpe, last year the Board of Trustees resolved to develop a Multi Academy Trust and negotiations are on-going in relation to potentially adding additional schools to our Trust structure; this is an exciting development and we will keep you updated as things progress.

As ever we are saying 'goodbye' to a few very valued members of staff, including Helen Forster who has been a teacher at Calthorpe for the last 13 years and Martin Tunstall who has been one of the Site Managers for 15 years; we wish them both a very happy and fulfilling retirement.

As we now approach the summer break, we wish all our wonderful students, supportive parents and carers, and dedicated staff an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to an exciting new year in September.

Very best wishes,

Richard

On Friday July 12th learners from the Secondary deparment participated in a drama production at the Birmingham Midlands Institute.

They worked with other secondary schools and Birmingham historian Carl Chinn in exploring Balsall Heath during World War Two. The learners put in a fantastic performance showing how people spent their time in air raid shelters telling stories and singing songs.

They all remembered their routines and speaking parts and got a big round of applause at the end of their performance. The staff were very proud of both their behaviour and their achievements.

Well done to all of our learners that were involved!

During the summer term, our Sixth Form learners have visited the fun fayre at Cannon Hill Park. This was a fantastic day with our students to interact with members of the community and other schools visiting the fayre.

Learners have also enjoyed making props and decorations this term for our Leavers Prom which took place on Thursday 4th July at the Saffron Centre. Students, staff, parents and carers came together to celebrate the work our learners have accomplished throughout their time at Calthorpe Academy and enjoyed a fantastic evening of food and dancing.

Throughout the year, learners in the Autism Department have gone on a range of community engagement trips.

This is in line with our school’s ethos of equipping the learners with skills they need for the life they want.

These have included visits to leisure centres and parks as well as shops.

Have a great summer!

Throughout this term, Sixth Form students involved in the art work based learning programme have worked with Weedon Architects in creating an artistic vision of Birmingham.

Through illustration, sculpture, collage and internet research, the group identified key buildings of the Birmingham skyline and created them in their own style.

Everyone involved worked exceptionally well. We hope to be exhibiting the finished artwork at a public space in central Birmingham.

Congratulations to all those with wonderful attendance; half of our students gained at least 95% attendance which is a fantastic achievement!

Attendance Prizes are being awarded to our highest attenders over the coming weeks. Prizes range from Sony Headphones to a 4 person Family Pass to Cadbury World in Birmingham.

School holidays are coming up and many parents wonder about whether they can go on holiday early or during term time. We are really clear that going on holiday in term time is unlawful unless you have the explicit permission of the head teacher to do so. By law, leave in term time can only be granted in exceptional circumstances and because of this, almost all holiday requests are denied and parents may be issued with a fixed penalty notice or court fine by the Council. For some of our parents, as a result of repeated or prolonged absence, parents have been required to attend court with fines in excess of £500. Please do not book holidays in term time. Every day in school is precious.

Reporting absences: DON’T FORGET TO CONTACT THE SCHOOL TO REPORT STUDENT ABSENCES. Please contact us on 0121 773 4637 daily regarding student absence.

Teacher Training: School will be closed Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd Sept 2019

Reminder – Please check the app for updates including attendance reporting and closed days

The primary department have had a busy Summer Term. We have enjoyed many trips and visits with some of our classes having weekly sessions at Hickory Dickory's soft play centre where pupils have had opportunities to develop their gross motor ability.

Some pupils recently enjoyed a fun-filled day out at Packwood House. They all took part in a multi-sensory welly walk where we discovered lots of different minibeasts and flowers. Pupils even had the opportunites to play on different instruments made from natural materials found in the forest and also made our own den!

Pupils have worked hard to develop their play and social skills this term which has included opportunities for water play in the playground - lots of staff joined in too!!!

I would like to thank all for your continued support and wish you a great summer holiday.

Pupils from the Complex and Sixth Form departments attended a music workshop in a sensory music space created just for them.

Pupils used instruments and music technology to compose and devise their own pieces of music.

The performance was so successful, Symphony Hall are holding regular music sessions for children with learning difficulties and their families to explore together.
